BASIC MATHEMATICS

· Basic Algebra: Logarithms and exponentials, exponents (e.g. (xn)m = ?, exez = ?), functions/graphs, quadratic equation (e.g. y = ax + bx2 + c) and solutions.

· Basic Matrix Algebra: Vector and matrix addition/multiplication, inverse of a matrix and solution of set of linear equations AX = b (e.g. linear dependence and independence).

· Basic Calculus: Derivative of functions and ‘rules’ of differentiation (e.g. y = x2/lnx, calculate dy/dx), unconstrained maximisation/minimisation, find max or min of y = 2-2x + 4x2).  Taylor series expansion (e.g. ex » 1 + x + x2/2).  Partial differential (e.g. find ¶y/¶x if y = 3x2 + xz + 4x2z2).  Rules of logarithms (e.g. ln(x/y) = lnx – lny).  Maximisation subject to constraints (Lagrangean).  Elementary integration (e.g. integrate, 1/x4 from x = 1 to x = 4).  Solution of 1st order difference equation (e.g. dy/dt + ay = b).

The above can actually be found in a good A-level text if you wish to “begin at the beginning”, otherwise try:

· Sydsaeter, K. and Hammond, P.  Essential Mathematics for Economic Analysis, Prentice Hall.  

· Ostaszewski, A.  Mathematics in Economics, Blackwells (particularly chapters 1, 2, 4-6 and 812).

BASIC STATISTICS

· Descriptive Statistics : Moments (such as mean, variance), covariance and correlation.

· Probability Distributions : random numbers, probabilities and different probability distributions (such as normal, binomial and Poisson), independence, conditional probabilities and conditional distributions, expectations and conditional expectations 

· Statistical Inference : confidence intervals, central limit theorem, hypothesis testing, chisquared distribution, t-tests and F-tests.

· Basic Regression Analysis : OLS, R2, two-variable and multivariate models.

There are many other books which cover these topics and they are usually called Business Statistics, or Statistics for Economics (Business Studies).  

Of course, if you have an undergraduate degree in Mathematics, Statistics or Physics then you should already be very familiar with the concepts above.

‘FINANCE’ MATERIAL

A gentle and general introduction to finance for those new to the subject can be found in: Valdez, S. (2003) An Introduction to Global Financial Markets, Macmillan Business, 4th ed.  For those who have not done any finance courses, we strongly recommend you read this.  It is very useful material for job interviews, some of which begin as early as November.
